Dont Hire Hotmail Users… what #JobSearch Ruslan Kogan has a LinkedIn Post (article) titled Dont hire Hotmail users other tips to save your company culture.  He says that his company created a good company culture by doing a number of things, #1 is: DONT HIRE SOMEONE WITH A HOTMAIL ACCOUNT. Ouch, says all the hotmail users out there. He says that they look at the email accounts and use them to filter the applicants in a way that ensures someone is the right fit for our organization.    He says if you have a @hotmail.com account then youre out. Double OUCH. Note that the comments are not very positive or supporting heres the point.  Whatever you think about hotmail doesnt matter.  What matters is discrimination and judgement, based on certain variables and obviously, what tools you use can categorize you as competent or not. Improving Team Dynamics in the Workplace Guest Post By Brian Neese An organization’s success is linked to specific team dynamics in the workplace. If employees are unable to communicate effectively, for example, performance will suffer. This can add to problems like low  employee engagement  and high rates of interpersonal conflict and turnover. “No job is truly isolated,” marketing leader Lama Ataya says. “Even if a particular position does not clearly fall under a distinct team, it will always require interacting with coworkers, managers, and subordinates in order to accomplish the job responsibilities.” Managers and business leaders can improve productivity and culture by being aware of the factors that affect team dynamics. Factors That Influence Team Dynamics A complex factor that impacts team dynamics is employee personality types. According to Harvard Business Review, extroverted team  leaders perform better  when matched with employees looking for guidance, while introverted team leaders fare better with workers who are proactive and take initiative. This idea is known as “dominance complementarity,” which means that groups tend to be more cohesive and effective when there is a balance of dominant and submissive leaders. To test this concept, researchers tracked extroverted leaders and how proactive employees were in a U.S. pizza delivery chain. The study looked at 57 different stores and each leader’s level of extraversion, as well as employees’ opinions of how proactive their store was as a group. Extroverted leadership was linked to significantly higher store profits when employees were passive. Stores with extroverts leading passive employees achieved 16 percent higher profits than those led by introverts. Extroverted leadership was linked to significantly lower store profits when employees were proactive. Stores with extroverts leading proactive employees had 14 percent lower profits. Researchers pointed out that introverts’ strengths are often “locked up” by the way work is structured. For example, meetings can turn into events where outgoing qualities are needed, requiring introverts to adjust in negative ways. Personality types, work structure and other factors (e.g. team size and available resources) all impact team dynamics. Changing one factor can have implications on another, as demonstrated in the research on dominance complementarity. Building High-Performing Teams Based on a poll of workplaces, Ataya provides eight qualities that successful teams share. Manageable size There is no perfect size, but teams can be ordered in sub-groups to take advantage of the benefits of larger and smaller teams. Larger teams tend to have more ideas, diverse perspectives and more human capital overall. Small teams tend to be more cohesive and are easier to manage, when it comes to arranging meetings, distributing tasks and making decisions. Equitable work division Participation and efficiency increase when work and responsibilities are divided appropriately. In Ataya’s survey, more than half of teams have a sense of collective responsibility (or accountability). Everyone receives credit when the team succeeds or takes responsibility when the team fails. Balanced leadership Most professionals (60.7 percent) who were polled consider the team leader to be the primary decision maker. “A team without a decisive, skilled, and hardworking leader is deficient,” Ataya says. “A team leader gives direction and clarity to the team, coordinates between different members, updates and corresponds to management, and generally ensures that the team is on the desired track.” This person also influences other team dynamics in the workplace. The poll found that for every team, the ideal team leader is someone who is able to: Make decisions, but also negotiate. Take responsibility, but also delegate. Speak up, but also listen. Work hard, but also help others reach their potential. Open communication Teams brainstorm, share ideas, provide feedback and follow up with one another to accomplish tasks. Some of the most important communication styles include openness, transparency and active participation. A study conducted by MIT’s Human Dynamics Laboratory found that successful teams  share the following characteristics, which are all rooted in communication. Everyone on the team talks and listens in roughly equal measure, keeping contributions short and sweet. Members face one another, and their conversations and gestures are energetic. Team members connect directly with one another â€" not just with the team leader. Members have side conversations within the team. Members take occasional breaks to explore and bring information back to the team. “The data also establish another surprising fact: Individual reasoning and talent contribute far less to team success than one might expect,” the researcher says. “The best way to build a great team is not to select individuals for their smarts or accomplishments but to learn how they communicate and to shape and guide the team so that it follows successful communication patterns.” Quick conflict resolution Disagreements and disputes will happen with any team. What is important is the team’s ability to move past differences and resolve conflicts in a healthy and productive manner. Conflict can help a team improve certain practices and decisions, ultimately bringing a team together. Almost 90 percent of teams in Ataya’s poll said that their team resolves conflicts honestly, quickly and effectively. Efficient use of resources An efficient team is able to create the highest value out of available resources. Budgets and time can be sources of frustration, but efficient teams can overcome these types of obstacles with creativity and by optimizing what is available to them. Ability to deliver More than 90 percent of teams in the poll meet their deadlines all or most of the time. Delivering on required outcomes is a direct indicator of an effective team. It is also the result of a team that communicates well, resolves conflict and other key concepts in this list. Team satisfaction Satisfaction is a simple way to gauge success and healthy team dynamics in the workplace. It impacts productivity and accomplishments within the team as well as an individual’s job satisfaction and work performance, which also benefits the organization. Some examples of notable academic activities include sports teams, involvement with school newspapers or websites, offices you held or honor society membership. You should also list achievements and experience that you’ve racked up outside of school or work. This might include travel, volunteering, involvement with civic organizations or membership in community or religious groups. All of this type of experience tells employers something about you and your ability to commit and interact in your community. Emphasise  skills: No matter how limited your actual work experience, there’s nothing to stop you from listing your skills and abilities on your resume. Whenever possible, list specific instances when you have used these skills. This could be at a job, in school or in your free time. For example, if you’ve built a blog or two that has a professional appearance you could list “Website Design” as a skill along with a link to your website. Other skills you might list, if relevant, include social media, computer programs at which you’re proficient, foreign languages you speak or machines you can operate or repair. Even skills that are not directly relevant to a job you’re applying for can bolster your resume. If you are bilingual, for example, it shows that you have certain verbal abilities. If you are proficient at playing the piano, it reveals both discipline and creativity. The importance of honesty: Job seekers are often tempted to embellish the truth on resumes, otherwise known as lying. When you are creating your first resume, you may think your chances of landing a job will improve by bending the truth. You should resist this temptation, as employers are becoming more thorough about fact checking resumes.  Recent research  has found that almost 60% of employers have caught job seekers lying on resumes. Happy birthday to m... HOLY COW, Im on digg - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog Theres been a lot of interesting stuff happening the last 24 hours: Today Fred and I both turn 38. Happy birthday Fred! Lost season finale yesterday. Im still confused. X-Men 3 opens today. Yay! And then something funny happened to my blog. I submitted my post on the top 10 mistakes managers of geeks make to reddit and well look what happened to my stats: Yikes. In short order the post got picked up by del.icio.us and Fark, but WordPress was till holding up. Then the post made it to the front page of digg, and the site promptly died :o) The best part is that the post really seemed to resonate with people and it got a lot of insightful comments and great feedback. Get more sleep- be happier at work - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog I think weve all experienced how getting too little sleep makes us tired and crabby. So it can hardly be a good thing that: 8 out of 10 Americans report at least one negative professional side-effect of getting a poor night?s sleep Only 27 percent of Americans get the recommended eight hours of sleep each work night 17 percent of Americans only get 5 hours of sleep Monday through Friday (Studies show that getting only 5 hours of sleep per night for a week induces an impairment level equal to a blood alcohol level of 0.1 percent.) Of the overwhelming majority of workers suffering from sleep deprivation, 44 percent say they experience bad moods and unfriendliness Its a classic dilemma: We want to get more work done, so we work longer hours and sleep less. This in turn makes us less efficient at work, so we work even longer hours and sleep even less and, boom, you have a negative spiral going. Also, spending your work day being tired and irritable is not exactly the recipe for happiness at work :o) What good is it to make your day an hour or two longer by sleeping less, if losing that sleep means you cant really enjoy your day? The Better Sleep Council has some very specific tips on how you can increase productivity by getting the sleep you need, including: Pay your sleep debt. It?s important to schedule 8 hours of sleep each night (7.5 to 8.5 is optimal) and maintain a regular sleep and wake schedule, even on the weekend. Bedroom business. Use your bedroom for sleep and sex only. Kick the caffeine habit. Avoid tea, coffee and soft drinks close to bedtime. Or maybe the solution is different for you. According to a new movement called the B-Society, some people are just not made to function optimally early in the morning. Even if they do get 8 hours of sleep, they only really kick into gear around 10 in the morning, and businesses should cater to these people also. The first Danish company has just been b-certified, meaning they acknowledge that this is how some people work, and structure their jobs accordingly. To me this is just common sense. Few business really need every employee to show op around the same time and could they just as easily leave this up to the individual employee, so they can decide what works best for them.
