Time Management And Conflicting Career Advice

Time management and conflicting career advice This is not your ordinary career site. I help the corporate worker who toils away in the company cubicle make career transitions. You want to do your job well, following all the rules -- . The career transitions where I can help you center on three critical career areas: How to land a job, succeed in a job, and build employment security. Top 10 Posts on Categories Fortune has a killer headline â€" Keep your job: A 10-point survival guide. Most of it is a good article and most of the ten points make sense. But the time management implications of conflicting career advice makes the advice a no-win situation for the Cubicle Warrior. For example, a great piece of advice is “keep your network active.” I wrote about how to do this in the last News newsletter that you can sign up for from the right sidebar. Networks are how you get jobs, so this makes great sense. Another is “update your skills.” You should “take a class, read a book, keep up with trade publications.” Job skills are important, no doubt. From there, however, it gets dicey. The two conflicting ones are these: For now, forget about work-life balance. A major preoccupation when the economy was humming along nicely, “having time for outside interests has to go right out the window now,” says Bright. “You need to concentrate on doing whatever it takes to make yourself indispensable.” Like anyone in a corporation is indispensable or won’t get laid off if they work 20-hours a day. Never happens. Then this one comes along: Remember, in the knowledge economy, you are the product. So take care of yourself. Get enough sleep, eat right, and take time to work out a few times a week. See, you have to throw out the work-life balance for outside interests and just work.   But you also need the time to get enough sleep, eat right, and take time to work out a few times a week. Plus keep your network active. Plus update your skills â€" even take a class and all the time that takes to do so. But throw work-life balance right out the window. I’ll sign up for that no-win scenario, no problem. Here at , we don’t set you up in no-win scenarios. We don’t even believe in work-life balance. Police Courtesy in Law Enforcement

Police Courtesy in Law Enforcement Police Courtesy in Law Enforcement In law requirement hovers over the United States, a tranquil discussion keeps on occurring about the fraternity of the slim blue line and expert graciousness among cops. At the core of the conversation is the subject of whether cops ought to get mercy on the off chance that they submit petty criminal offenses and even a few wrongdoings, especially considering the extreme occupation they have and the significance of remaining together. Proficient Courtesy Proficient civility isn't one of a kind to law requirement; a particular related soul absolutely exists across about all callings. Servers, for instance, frequently tip individual servers better when feasting out. Cordiality industry laborers may frequently deal with their kindred specialists by giving them free beverages or improved assistance. Verifiably, specialists have offered free administrations to individual doctors and their relatives. The truth of the matter is, individuals who play out the equivalent or comparative occupations have a specific thankfulness and comprehension of what they manage from everyday, and they have a characteristic tendency toward sympathy and a longing to enable each other to out. Taking into account how intense every average day for a cop can be, its no little marvel that individual officials might be slanted to look the other way when their siblings and sisters in blue submit minor infringement and infractions. Better expectations for Police Officers In law authorization, however, the general population anticipates that their officials should be held to a high moral norm. So as to play out their occupations and achieve their crucial improving open security, officials depend on the publics trust. Some portion of that trust involves a desire that officials will keep the law and show others how its done. Escape Jail Free? Regularly, proficient civility for cops is given-or possibly expected-in rush hour gridlock stops. Youve no uncertainty seen the slight blue line stickers on the back windows of vehicles in rush hour gridlock. Numerous officials and open security experts show the apparently harmless sticker as an image to different officials that theyre at work, an expression applied to the individuals who work in law implementation. The desire is that different officials will be permissive on the grounds that were all in it together. By and large, officials are allowed wide caution in what laws they implement and how they uphold them. References, captures, notification to appear and composed or verbal alerts are on the whole on the table in many examples. Realizing that a violator is a cop can regularly impact another officials choice on the best way to utilize their carefulness. Mercy for Cops - Right or Wrong? Be that as it may, is it right? Should cops get exceptional thought? Or on the other hand would it be advisable for them to be relied upon to observe the law - all laws - simply like every other person and to get indistinguishable outcomes from every other person? For the individuals who fall in favor of mercy and expert politeness, the contention is that nobody else comprehends what officials face from everyday. Many state that individual officials will be the ones to back you up when you need assistance, thus you have to remember that when you have one halted. Now and again, a ticket or a capture may mean someones work, which settles on the choice to make implementation move considerably more troublesome. Officials, some state, should deal with one another.? Whos the Rat? While it might be sensible for officials to anticipate some thought, some law requirement experts get absolute furious when they or an individual from their family gets a traffic ticket or even a composed admonition. Officials who compose passes to different officials are now and then called rodents or more awful, and there are some who firmly accept that under practically no conditions should an official make implementation move against another, regardless of whether on or off the clock. Achieving the Mission In truth, this idea contradicts why officials decide to work in law authorization, in the first place. It additionally subverts the trust people in general has put in the calling. The truth of the matter is, officials are required to be excellent in keeping the law with the goal that they can have believability when they authorize it. Neglecting to cling to the law, or be held to the equivalent or better quality that we hold general society to, detracts from the capacity of officials to adequately uphold laws and in this manner removes their capacity to protect lives and property. Genuine Professional Courtesy Instead of express displeasure at another official for neglecting to give a professional kindness to another, the shock is better coordinated toward the individual who put the official in that position, in the first place. To put it plainly, paying little heed to your calling, on the off chance that somebody wouldn't like to be responsible to the law, at that point the best strategy is to not break it in any case. Cops comprehend that their calling is one of a kind and that officials need to remain together on the off chance that they are to be fruitful and remain safe. Be that as it may, they likewise are very much mindful of the outcomes of overstepping laws-even transit regulations. Other than the lawful results and the burden of the cash based cost of a traffic ticket, there are certifiable outcomes when things turn out badly. Laws are set up to guard individuals from hurt. At the point when officials neglect to tail them, or neglect to take ownership of their errors and refuse to acknowledge the obligation and outcomes of their own activities, they stop to be a piece of the arrangement and begin turning out to be a piece of the issue.

The constant inhalation of dust, especially coal dust, results in pneumoconiosis, also known as black lung or coal miners lung. Unfortunately, there are no symptoms at the onset of pneumoconiosis. However, as the disease progresses, shortness of breath and chest tightness become common.   There is no cure for miners lung. So, miners must take extra care to avoid inhaling airborne dusts, such as coal dust, asbestos, and silica. Your employer should have a dust control plans in place, and you should wear protective gear at all times. Additionally, miners need regular health checkups to ensure these precautions are working.   Slips and Falls One of OSHAs Fatal Four, slips and falls, arent necessarily a health hazard on their own, but the side effects of falling certainly are. Depending on the severity of your fall, you could face broken bones, cuts, and lacerations, and even death. In fact, between the years of 2011 and 2015, there were six mining deaths called by slips and falls. The best ways to prevent slips and falls include: Appropriate warning signage throughout work areas Wearing personal protective equipment like non-slip work boots Everyone completing mine safety training These preventative measures will ensure you avoid the health hazards associated with slips and falls. Radon Radon is a type of radioactive, odorless gas found in underground mines. Because its radioactive, radon can cause cancer (specifically lung cancer) if you approach it without protection. If you work in a mine where radon is present, management should have radon reducing measures set in place. On top of those measures, you should wear protective gear and limit your shifts to minimize exposure.   Noise With heavy machinery, drilling, and crushing, noise in mines is a real issue. Overexposure to loud noises can result in tinnitus and permanent hearing loss. Unfortunately, hearing damage isnt typically something that you notice right away; it takes a long time for the damage to be noticeable.   There are two ways to minimize the damage noise can cause: at the source and with personal protective gear. Regular machine maintenance and adding noise controls like dampeners or absorptive panels to the machines can significantly reduce the noise they produce. Miners should also wear hearing protection and get regular hearing checkups.   Mercury Mercury exposure and poisoning is a real threat to miners. Mercury is found in about 25% of all minerals found in mines, so miners can easily inhale, swallow, or absorb mercury through their skin. Its important to note that you dont need to be exposed to a large amount of mercury at one time to experience mercury poisoning. Exposure to small amounts of mercury over a long period is typically how mercury poisoning occurs.   Mercury poisoning can result in abdominal pain, headaches, and cardiac weakness, so if mercury has been found in your mine, you must always wear your protective gear.   Polymeric Chemicals Miners are frequently exposed to polymeric chemicals as part of their regular work. Exposure to polymeric chemicals can cause occupational asthma, and skin and eye irritation. Chemical exposure is particularly dangerous because it occurs with inhalation and minimal skin contact.   Typical prevention procedures include using personal protective equipment to handle and dispose of the chemicals.   Thermal Stress Mines are usually very hot and humid. Exposure to this kind of temperature every day can take a major toll on a miners body. Additionally, overexposure to heat and humidity can quickly cause someone to become overly fatigued; this fatigue is also known as thermal stress. If the mine you work in contributes to heat stress, management needs to step in to prevent it from affecting employees.   Mines should have temperature-regulating equipment, and miners should limit their exposure to the high heat. Miners should also be provided with personal protective equipment that incorporates breathable fabric and personal cooling systems.   Learn to Safely Work in a Mine with MSHA Training Although this blog post is a great introduction to the health hazards of working in a mine, its not a replacement for formal mine safety training. Here are 5 tips for getting out of mental health traps

Here are 5 hints for escaping psychological well-being traps Here are 5 hints for escaping psychological wellness traps There are sure attitudes each originator needs to effectively work to keep away from, such as compelling yourself to actually contact each task, trusting you must be killing it consistently when you're discussing your organization to other people, and feeling like you can never rest. I've by and by committed each of the 3 of these errors (and each other mix-up you'll see here), and every one can truly take its toll.Looking back, it's anything but difficult to state I shouldn't have committed these errors, yet when you are in a mess all, it's very simple to can be categorized as one of these traps. Here are five of the most hazardous mental snares I've fallen into - so gain from them!1. Saying, I'll take care of business, on the off chance that you see a colleague moving too gradually and you have an inclination that you can accomplish the work quicker yourself. This is simply the slip-up I discover making most often. It's particularly predominant among originators of beginning period ne w companies, in those circumstances when you've employed another colleague to assume control over some aspect of your responsibilities for you. In all actuality, a recently recruited employee will require time to increase, to get familiar with the activity - and obviously, during that learning period, they won't have the option to finish the errands you used to do as quick as you can.But that doesn't make a difference. Assuming control over their outstanding burden is something contrary to what you need to do, in light of the fact that it will keep them from consistently having the option to run their space self-rulingly. That will, thusly, keep you from consistently having the option to scale your company. And it'll have opposite reactions, as well. Offending your new teammate harms their assurance - particularly on the off chance that they're now experiencing a touch of Imposter Syndrome. Also, it squanders cash in circumstance cost, for the most part in the long run.Let your recen tly recruited employees battle so they develop - in any event for the initial not many weeks.2. Estimating hours, not progressIn the startup world, it's annoyingly regular to catch individuals boasting about how frequently they get to the workplace early or remain there late. That actually implies nothing.Unlike in Corporate America, that facetime doesn't make a difference here. The only thing that is important is progress. Here's what I've realized: I would prefer to have my group rest later and leave prior if that implies they are more honed and increasingly gainful when they're in the workplace. What makes a difference are expectations. To gauge somebody's commitment to a developing organization or cause, you need just glance at things like: What they achieve In the event that they hit guide objectives or cutoff times On the off chance that they're a dependable and regarded colleague Obviously, originators regularly act in manners which prop up this deception, as well. I attempt to abstain from doing that by making day by day agendas for myself, and estimating my day as per what sensible undertakings I've cultivated or gained ground on during the day.Ultimately, being objective arranged - rather than hours-situated - is the manner by which you adjust originations of profitability with progress, for both yourself and your team.3. Having an inclination that you can't take a breakMany originators routinely drive themselves to the point of depletion in running their organization - intellectually running 18 straight hours daily, never permitting themselves to stop, rest, or get away. They feel it's what they have to do. I've even observed originators post about their hard working attitude on Instagram or Twitter as an approach to get some social approval that what they are doing is extra-common. Nothing gives you inspiration nowadays like that late night like or retwe et.But as a general rule, that is inefficient. Consuming yourself out makes you less compelling. The startup life is a long distance race - not a run. What's more, in spite of a portion of the extremely weird and exceptionally splendid individuals you'll meet en route, we aren't all robots (or cyborgs)… yet.If you end up continually immersed with errands or things to do that appear to drive you to work while never taking a break, make a stride back and reflect. Frequently, you'll see that you're taking longer than you likely need finishing certain errands since you are: Occupied (not all messages should be addressed immediately) Fumbling your time Not giving yourself enough profound work time It's tied in with being intentional. The familiar proverb truly sounds accurate: work more brilliant, not harder. That additionally implies permitting yourself to take breaks.4. Attempting to be the cool bossThere's an almost negligible difference between being the chief and being a companion. At the point when you're running a beginning time startup - under obligation to your group, financial specialists, and to yourself - it's in every case better to be the former. That implies, basically, being (horrendously) fair in your productive analysis and coaching. It's acceptable to be benevolent, however pretending genuineness will have uncommon outcomes, both by and by and broad. In addition to other things, it will: Advance a clearly political organization environment wherein your group is contending not to be beneficial or important, however to be an individual from some originator inward circle. Destroy you actually, since the issues you neglect to get out are never being helped. This will in the end cause you to loathe that individual to the point of needing to fire them. Disabled person your item, since the input circle is broken. Forestall your organization culture from developing into one of trustworthiness, straightforwardness and consistent input, which is the thing that you need. At the point when you have to have hard discussions, simply rip the bandage off. Be immediate and state what you have to state. It's the main way things will improve. What's more, genuinely, as long as you stay proficient with your input, no one will blame you. In all actuality, your group will - and should - flaw you in case you're not doing your job.5. Thinking you have to tell everyone things are going extraordinary all the timeFounders may be more liable of this psychological snare than any of the others. Converse with a companion or associate who's beginning an organization at this moment, and ask them how it's going. 99% of the time, you'll hear: It's going great. Not just is this regularly unscrupulous, yet it has other unanticipated results, as well. It can: Annoy individuals, since more often than not it puts on a show of being insincere or as you stroking your own sense of self. Block you from accepting what may be truly important counsel or help, since the individuals who could offer it to you won't think you need it. Reduction your validity - particularly after individuals discover things really aren't going incredible, despite the fact that you revealed to them the inverse only a brief time prior. By and by, I propel myself - at this phase in my vocation - cutting straight to the chase while addressing this inquiry. Guess what? Sh-t's hard at the present time. Saying that to individuals in any event is straightforward, and even better, may assist me with shaping bonds with others who've experienced a similar battle. Toward the day's end, everybody engaged with the startup pound makes mistakes. That's not out of the ordinary. What's significant is that you don't commit the errors you can avoid. That begins with staying away from these psychological traps. This article was initially distributed on Quora.

How to Convey Your Executive Personal Brand in Your LinkedIn Profile

How to Convey Your Executive Personal Brand in Your LinkedIn Profile Do you have a bare-bones LinkedIn Profile but you’re not sure how to make it stronger? Nearly every executive I speak with laments the lack of time and ideas for creating an engaging, interesting LinkedIn presence reflecting their personal brand. Yet, all it takes is a quick glance at your Profile, changing it section by section, until you’re happy with the final result. Try these strategies for building a strong, relevant portrait of your executive competencies on LinkedIn: 1 Tune your LinkedIn Headline for the right executive role. Don’t settle for LinkedIn’s default (your current job title). Instead, provide a keyword-rich descriptor that positions you for the role you hold now, plus a step up in the future. As an example, Senior Vice President Sales at ABC Manufacturing implies strong team management and closing skills, but SVP Sales Revenue Officer, Top Team Results New Consultative Processes Distinguishing Manufacturing Firms tells a more complete story. Out of ideas for your Headline? Start with your career level (CIO, Sales Manager, Director of IT, etc.), then add key skills, such as IT Roadmaps or Product Strategy. Make reference to a result, such as New Technology Platforms or Revenue Growth. Read  A Fast Formula for a Powerful LinkedIn Headline for more ideas. And last of all, keep the Headline to 120 characters or less â€" and road test it by asking trusted contacts for feedback. 2 Participate (appropriately) in LinkedIns News Feed discussions. This may seem to be an unusual step in personal branding but LinkedIn will feature your Profile more often in search results if you are engaging other users in discussions. Take a look at the posts and comments scrolling by in your home page on LinkedIn, and consider joining in the discussion. By doing so, youre telling LinkedIn that you value professional discourse, and it will show your Profile (and News Feed activity) more prominently. To maintain a leadership brand image, be sure to keep your discussion activity strictly professional, maintaining the same tone and focus youd use in an interview. These activities stay on your Profile for months and are visible to employers! Stick to non-volatile topics related to your industry, such as the pros and cons of new technology or the ramifications of international expansion. 3 Write an engaging LinkedIn Summary. Your LinkedIn Summary is one of the best places to reflect a strong executive brand message; yet, many rising leaders leave it blank or worse yet, write it in third-person (much like a boring, overly formal biography). Rather than ignoring this crucial LinkedIn section, consider using a conversational tone, much like you would when interviewing, to tell your story. Interject keywords and job titles that show your stature, as this allows you to imply that you might be open to a new opportunity (rather than giving away your intentions). As an example, your Summary might open with: * Senior Operations Executive * Manufacturing Retail Industries As a COO and VP of Operations, my work is relevant to the efficiency and daily functioning of 7 manufacturing plants across Americas, Europe, and Asia. By increasing our productivity and maintaining a tight culture of safety, I’m able to maintain peak production (5 years and counting), while looking out for the best interests of our manufacturing teams. Note how this Summary uses first-person language to build rapport with the reader, pulling in a strong suite of keywords (Manufacturing, Operations, Retail, Productivity, Production, Safety, etc.) and describing this executive’s ROI at the current employer. 4 Quit ignoring LinkedIns Skills section. Learn to play LinkedIn’s Skills section as a key part of the online identity game. A notable factor in your traffic, this list of competencies can draw employer eyeballs to your Profile when populated with desirable skills and endorsements from your network. Here’s how it works: you specify skills related to your field, such as Data Center Strategy, Marketing, Lead Generation, or Operations in this section. Other users endorse you for these skills (which typically happens when they visit your Profile, receive prompts from LinkedIn to do so, or receive Endorsements from you). LinkedIn then recognizes the value of these terms as key areas of your expertise, and starts to feature you more often in searches for these keywords. Its as simple as that. 5 Provide a corner office-worthy LinkedIn Photo. Did you skip out on providing a photo on LinkedIn, telling yourself you’d take care of it later? You could be missing out on solid connections with recruiters and employers, who often avoid reaching out to LinkedIn users without a headshot. If you’re not sure what type of photo to provide, take a look around at professionals and executives in similar roles. Are they wearing a traditional, conservative suit and tie, or using a headshot from a more relaxed setting? You can gain clues from looking at what others use in your field. In addition, the old advice about dressing for the job you want holds true here. If you’re ultimately aiming for a CEO role, start to look the part (even if you’re still a Director). Colorful attire is a good idea if it reflects your personality and industry, particularly in a creative field that requires a bold presence. Insider tip:  ask real estate agents for the name a good headshot photographer, who will produce a variety of shots. Test them out by watching the reactions to your newly enhanced LinkedIn presence. There’s no time like the present to update your LinkedIn Profile to match your executive leadership skills. Trade blank LinkedIn sections for concise, keyword-specific descriptions of expertise aligned with your career goals.
